Mojo Spa
Most businesses suffered during the pandemic, but business boomed for Mojo Spa. Customers all over the world made Mojo Spa’s handmade, non-toxic, and plant-based products online best sellers.
The brand’s only retail location in Chicago, IL, now needs a refresh with bold colors, dynamic displays, and spaces that that support Mojo Spa’s re-emerging programming.
From the co-owner:
“We want to streamline our store to focus on our beauty products and in-store events. We emphasize the fun factor- feel good, look good!”

Design Proposal
Owner Goals:
Remove pedicure stations
Repurpose the back storage area for events and online order staging
Emphasize the fun factor- create more interactive moments in the store
Reuse existing display infrastructure where possible
Design preference: florals, handmade, maximalist, bold!
Design Response:
Dynamic, colorful design that adds interest to the space without distracting from the products
A highly photogenic space with fun and interactive experiences (product samples, Mask Bar, photo wall, cotton candy machine, event space, mixers, mirrors, hand washing station)
New Mask Bar with storage and ingredient displays
Provide storage and displays that are functional and celebrate the handmade aesthetic
Handmade tissue paper flowers are an integral element of Mojo Spa’s current design. The owner wanted to maintain them in the renovation.
The tissue paper flowers take on a new life with a centered canopy, draping over the length of the store and ending in a selfie wall with a lighted Mojo Spa sign. The flower canopy adopts the current color palette- bold reds, pinks, and oranges. It is maximalist in nature by adding texture, color, and dynamism to the store without distracting from the product displays.
Plywood display tables and shelves embrace the handmade element of Mojo Spa’s products and offer important opportunities for product storage. 2D florals adjacent to the check-out counter are part custom art installation and part product display.
“The Feel Good Beauty Co.” draws attention to the counter and reminds each customer of Mojo Spa’s slogan and mission! Product displays continue on walls and island tables as customers approach the new Mask Bar.
On the right, display walls are color blocked and host products by collection. The photo wall is defined with a pink floor and adjacent shelving where customers can grab props and accessories.
The Mask Bar replaces the former pedicure station.
The greenery wall evokes the natural ingredients in Mojo Spa’s products and hosts a photo wall of product collection photography. At the Mask Bar, customers can make their own custom masks and body scrubs with ingredients from wall-mounted containers and undermount bins at the counter.
A new hand washing station is the heart of the store; it is a focal point under a glowing, bubbling chandelier. It’s a place to try multiple products while connecting with fellow Mojo Spa enthusiasts at the communal faucets.
The rear of the store is a gathering space for groups, an event space, and a staging area for online orders. Mojo artwork and flexible furniture allow this space to have multiple uses with minor effort needed to rearrange furniture.
