Sensory PLAY: a Temporary Exhibit
RMW was invited by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) to participate in their 7th annual IIDA San Francisco Scene Local showcase.
IIDA’s annual Scene Local event is a showcase of 15’ x 40’ experiential exhibit spaces designed and created by teams of local designers, architects, furniture manufacturers and contract firms. 2019’s event challenged participating teams to explore the concept of Sensory PLAY while pushing the boundaries on materials, aesthetics, design and function.
RMW created a dynamic experience within our tiny space that was playful and energetic, but also hosted spaces for restoration and recharge. We balanced visual, auditory, and tactile experiences in two distinctly different zones.
Guests entered our space in a dim space illuminated by task lighting and silent disco headphones hanging on a dark moss wall. This was a space of limited visual excitement, where you could get lost in the music, enjoy the beauty and texture of the fabric and moss walls, or share a drink with colleagues. We encouraged sitting with an assortment of seating options. After a period of time in the dark space, we encouraged guests to switch the station of their silent disco headphones and enter the next zone of excitement and activity.
The next space was designed to inspire energetic interaction with plenty of space to dance and mingle. A blank backdrop of white walls, furniture, and accents were colorfully illuminated by red, blue, and green lights- designed specifically to cast visitors’ rainbow shadows.
RMW’s exhibit was awarded the People’s Choice Award and was awarded Second Place by the IIDA jury.
