Northern California’s Best (Looking) Wineries

Visiting the wineries of Northern California is a fantastic way to sample award-winning wines at their source.

But.. what if someone were more interested in the architecture of the wineries and not the wines? Where would this person visit?

For my architecture loving friends, here is my "bucket list" of some of the most architecturally significant wineries that I have yet to visit!*

Hamel Family Wines

Architect: Gould Evans
Design: A simple shed roof structure with an emphasis on the use of natural materials and focus on beautiful vistas of the vineyards.

Ashes & Diamonds Winery

Architect: Barbara Bestor
Design: Elegantly whimsical. Crumpled awnings cover tasting rooms that are sprinkled with colored accent walls and furniture.

Williams Selyem Winery

Architect: Alex Ceppi and D.arc Group LLC
Design: The bold, quirky architectural baby of James Cutler and Michael Graves.

Quintessa

Architect: Walker Warner Architects
Design: Massive stone walls guide and separate more intimate moments at this winery. Private pavilions in simple, honest materials beautifully frame views of the winery.

Artesa Vineyards & Winery

Architect: Domingo Triay
Design: Is it a Mayan temple or Napa winery? Bold geometries and grass clad-facades look over a large hill with pools and fountains.

Dominus Estate

Architect: Herzog de Meuron
Design: Unconventional gabion wall mix strength and beauty, accenting the interior with deep stone shadows and bright spots of sunlight.
